Contentment Births Gratitude

Contentment Births Gratitude

Echoes of Truth

Theme: Contentment Births Gratitude

You say, ‘If I had a little more, I would be very satisfied.’ You make a mistake. If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satisfied if it were doubled – Charles Spurgeon

Man has an insatiable want for more. The lie that the serpent sold to the woman which man also bought was to create the desire to have more than already at hand. It said to the woman that if you ate it, you would be like God. This means that whatever you  have and whoever you are as the man that God comes to walk with in the cool of the day is not enough. You need to become like God Himself.

Unfortunately, even though Christ has come to redeem us from the curse of discontentment (1 Corinthians 10:10), we still allow its hold over us such that we lack true gratitude to God in our hearts. Since gratitude does not have root in our hearts, we are never truly satisfied.

The lie many live with is the assumption that satisfaction will come when we have more: more money, more recognition, more comfort, or more opportunities. Yet Scripture teaches us that contentment is not produced by abundance, but by the posture of the heart, as Apostle Paul shares that he has trained himself to live in plenty or in lack because he can do all things through Christ who strengthens him (Phil 4:11-13).

ECHOES OF TRUTH

Discontentment arises not because we lack, but because our hearts are focused on what we do not have or have in our measure of sufficiency, rather than on what God has already provided.

We begin to compare our lives with others, scrolling on social media measuring our lives against people’s filtered contents. We keep pursuing more, leaving us restless and empty. We never get to enter into the rest that God has kept its doors wide open before us.

The truth is doubling what we have will not cure us of this want but would raise the standard making us crave for more. True contentment begins with recognizing God as our ultimate source and being thankful for that reality. When we have this mindset, we no longer focus on things to satisfy us but only the Lord, trusting His timing at all times.

Discontentment often reveals misplaced priorities. When our sense of fulfillment is tied to material possessions, achievements, or applause, we set ourselves up for disappointment. These things are temporary and earthly with no eternal value.

Jesus warned against storing up treasures on earth, where they can be lost or destroyed, and encouraged His followers to seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:19-33). A heart seeking eternal riches would not be shaken by temporary lack.

Gratitude is one of the most effective weapons against discontentment. When we intentionally acknowledge God’s blessings, we shift our focus from scarcity to abundance. Gratitude reminds us of God’s faithfulness in the past and builds confidence for the future. It trains our hearts to see provision where we might otherwise see absence.

A thankful heart recognizes that even in seasons of waiting or difficulty, God is still at work. Gratitude kills grumbling and murmuring which are by-products of discontentment. Shift your focus off lack and be mindful of the many blessings from God. You’ll be amazed at the intentionality of God.

Get rid of discontentment and let gratitude rise from within you.

Let Us Pray:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for being our God and our source. In You all things exist and we thank You for we exist in You. Please forgive us for all the times we have been discontented, comparing ourselves with others and chasing after ‘more’ instead of loving You more. We pray that You help us to always know that You are our source. Instill within us the attitude of gratitude. Turn our eyes from what is yet to be done and help us to focus on what You have done. Thank You Lord, for You are enough, in Jesus name we pray. Amen
