Stop Waiting for God to Move

ECHOES OF TRUTH

One of the most comforting things we like to say as Christians is also, honestly, one of the most misused: “I’m just waiting on the Lord.”

We say it when our prayer life feels completely dry. We say it when we are stuck in a financial rut, or when we are desperate to break free from old habits and bondages. We fold our arms, sit back, do absolutely nothing, and convince ourselves that our inactivity is actually a sign of deep, patient faith.

But there is a very thin line between waiting in faith and just being spiritually lazy.

In the everyday world, waiting for someone means sitting down on a chair, scrolling through your phone, and letting time pass until they show up. But in the spiritual realm, waiting on God is completely different! Spiritual waiting is active. It means keeping your heart completely focused on Him, staying alert, and moving your feet. It is a partnership, not a spectator sport.

Spiritual growth, victory, and breakthroughs do not happen automatically, my dear sister.

Many of us spend years waiting for God to magically drop a miracle into our laps, completely missing the fact that God is actually waiting for us to seek Him and take action.

The Trap of Passive Waiting

There are many believers trapped in this cycle. They struggle with deep-seated habits or addictions,  whether it’s anger, pornography, toxic relationships, or substances, and they cry out in total frustration: “God, why haven’t You delivered me yet? I sowed a financial seed! I even fasted for a whole month! Why am I still struggling?”

Others feel weighed down by heavy, spiritual warfare or terrifying dreams, knowing there are negative patterns passed down from their family line fighting their destiny. Yet, instead of standing up to fight back, they fold their arms and say, “Well, I’m just waiting for the day the Lord decides to fight my battles.”

That kind of faith is dead. It assumes that just because Jesus won the ultimate victory on the Cross, everything in our daily lives will automatically fix itself without us lifting a finger.

No sis! Indeed, the prison door has already been unlocked by Jesus, but if you refuse to stand up, turn the handle, and walk out, you will stay a captive in an open cell.

God does not operate on autopilot. He is not going to magically fix your prayer life while you sleep, slide you into His purpose for your life while you sit back, or drop a beautiful, godly marriage into your lap while you spend all your time passively scrolling through social media or buried completely in your studies. He works with you. He gives you instructions and nudges that require you to open your mouth, change your schedule, and move your legs. You have to invite Him into your situation, passionately!

Waiting on the Hillside

To see what this passive trap looks like in real life, look at the story of Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. For forty long days, King Saul and the entire army of Israel stood frozen on a hillside, staring across the valley at a giant who was mocking them.

The Bible says they were “dismayed and greatly afraid.”

Oh, c’mon! These were God’s chosen covenant people! They had the promises, the history, and the literal backing of the Creator of the universe. Yet, morning after morning, they just stood there.

They were probably holding prayer meetings, crying, and waiting for God to send a random lightning bolt from heaven to strike the giant dead. They wasted over a month in fearful, passive “waiting,” expecting an automatic miracle while doing absolutely nothing to change the situation.

Then, a teenage shepherd boy named David walks onto the field. David doesn’t pull up a chair on the hill and join their fearful prayer meeting. He doesn’t say, “Well, if it’s God’s will, Goliath will drop dead eventually.” Instead, he looks at the giant and says:

“Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” — 1 Samuel 17:26

David understood a massive Kingdom secret: God’s power flows when human beings cooperate!!!

God wasn’t going to send a sword from the sky; He was waiting for a person to step onto the dirt. David didn’t wait around for the giant to disappear. He walked straight into the valley, spoke directly to the problem, picked up five smooth stones, and swung his sling. The army was waiting for God to move, but God was waiting for someone to seek Him, take courage, and move their feet.

Walking into the Unknown

We see this exact same pattern at the very start of Abraham’s journey. When God called him, He didn’t hand him a finished map or pack his bags for him while Abraham sat comfortably at home. God simply said, “Go to a land that I will show you” (Genesis 12:1).

Abraham couldn’t sit back in his armchair and say, “Well, God promised to bless me, so I’ll just stay right here until He moves the new land under my tent.”

He had to pack up his whole life, step into the absolute unknown, and start walking. He had to stay continually in tune with God’s voice just to know where to turn next per time. At any time he chose to do his own way, he’d probably be left stranded in the wilderness, so, he cooperated and clung to His God.

From the outside, his life looked totally foolish- wandering through deserts toward a place he had never seen, believing he’d have a son when his body was way too old.

But he never tuned out. He never assumed things would just happen automatically because God made a promise. He stayed connected, kept talking to God, and actively pursued Him daily. True faith is simply obeying the last thing God told you to do, while keeping your ears open for the next step.

The Law of Waiting and Cooperation

Throughout the Bible, God makes it clear that He wants to work with us, not instead of us. He has unlimited power, but He consistently waits for us to take an action of faith before that power is released:

Before Jesus turned water into wine in John 2, human hands had to fill massive stone water pots to the brim. Jesus did not snap His fingers and make wine appear out of nowhere; He transformed what they willingly brought and poured out.

Before Jesus multiplied food to feed a stadium of people in Matthew 14, a young boy had to hand over his personal lunch. God requested the small seed of what was available before He granted the supernatural harvest.

Jesus had the power to shout and shatter the stone blocking Lazarus’ grave in John 11. Instead, He looked at the crowd and commanded: “Take away the stone.” Why? Because God will not do for you what He has already given you the strength to do for yourself.

Waiting Beside the Well Without a Bucket

Imagine a man dying of thirst, sitting right next to a deep well that is overflowing with fresh, cool, life-giving water. Instead of dropping a rope, he just sits in the dirt, looks up at the sky, and cries out, “God, if it’s Your will, please make it rain directly into my mouth! I am waiting on You!”

We would look at that man and think he was being completely foolish. Yet, this is exactly how so many of us live out our Christian walk.

We pray for a spiritual fire, but we leave our Bibles covered in dust on the shelf.

We beg for clear direction, but we refuse to turn off our phones and spend good quiet minutes or hours actually listening for His voice.

We panic in front of the giants and mountains in our lives, but we refuse to open our mouths, stand our ground, and speak the Word of God over our situations.

The well of the Holy Spirit inside you is infinitely deep, but prayer, study, worship, and simple obedience are the buckets you use to pull that water up. Stop begging for water if you are completely unwilling to drop your bucket.

Stop Waiting, Start Seeking

When God says in Malachi 3:7, “Return to Me, and I will return to you,” He gives us a clear order of operations. He doesn’t say, “Stay exactly where you are in your comfort zone, and I will come do everything for you.” He invites us to take a step toward Him first.

“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”Jeremiah 29:13

God is not playing hide-and-seek with your breakthrough. He is standing right there, waiting to see if your hunger for Him will finally become bigger than your comfort.

This Juicy July: What is Your Posture?

As we step into this season of Juicy July, you have a choice to make. Will you keep passively sitting on the hillside, waiting for your giants to magically disappear, while blaming God for His silence? Will you stay stuck in the same old cycles of frustration, addiction, or stagnant living?

Or will you do what David and Abraham did?

Take your eyes off the size of your problems, shake off the paralysis, and run down into the valley of an active relationship with God. Use the spiritual authority He has already put inside you and shoot. You’d see the giant crumbling down!

Stop waiting for God to move. Drop your bucket into the well, tune your heart back into His frequency, and watch how quickly things change when you draw near.

God has been waiting for you all along.

Let Us Pray

Father, in the name of Jesus, forgive me for the times I have mistaken passivity for faith. Forgive me for waiting when You were calling me to seek, pray, obey, and draw near.

Lord, deliver me from lazy Christianity. Deliver me from sitting on the hillside while giants continue to speak. Deliver me from expecting breakthroughs while neglecting the responsibilities You have placed in my hands.

Father, awaken my hunger for You. Revive my prayer life. Revive my love for Your Word. Revive my passion for holiness and fellowship with You.

Give me the courage of David to confront the giants before me. Give me the faith of Abraham to obey even when I cannot see the full picture. Give me the persistence of Moses to remain in Your presence until Your purposes are established.

Lord, teach me to cooperate with You. Help me to seek You with all my heart. Help me to take the steps of faith You are asking of me instead of waiting for things to happen automatically.

As Juicy July approaches, I refuse to remain stagnant. I refuse to remain passive. Give me grace to pray, grace to seek, grace to obey, and grace to pursue You wholeheartedly.

Thank You because as I draw near to You, You will draw near to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
