The Mark of True Love

Theme: True Love Revealed

The chief mark of true love to God is delight in His presence — Andrew Murray

It is true that what we truly love, we naturally gravitate toward. No one needs to force affection. The heart moves willingly toward what it delights in. Until we realize this, we may continue convincing ourselves that love for God is proven merely by routines or outward devotion, while our hearts remain distant from His presence.

Many realities confront us daily that expose where our delight truly lies. We make time for conversations we enjoy. We return repeatedly to what brings us comfort. Yet when it comes to God, do we hurry through prayer? Do we endure His presence rather than enjoy it? These questions gently uncover whether our love is affection or obligation.

When we begin to understand that the essence of Christianity is not merely service to God but communion with Him, we see that delight in His presence is the very foundation we cannot negotiate. David’s cry, “One thing have I desired… to behold the beauty of the Lord” (Psalm 27:4), reveals that true love narrows its focus to one supreme longing: nearness.

The constant distractions of life compete fiercely for our attention. But love that does not seek presence eventually grows cold.

ECHOES OF TRUTH

Revelation 2:4–5 reminds us that it is possible to labour faithfully and yet lose first love. The evidence of restored love is a return to Him, not to activity.

Recognizing the beauty of God’s presence helps us redirect our affection. It shifts prayer from ritual to relationship. It turns Scripture from obligation into conversation with God. Oh, how sweet.

As we practice drawing near to God, we begin to experience the delight of James 4:8: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

There have been seasons when we were satisfied with lesser joys, lesser achievements, lesser applause, lesser companionship, lesser comfort; yet none of these quiet the soul like God does. This teaches us a deeper reality, that the human heart was created to delight in God alone. Anything else, no matter how good, cannot sustain it.

If God is truly our treasure, our hearts will rest in Him (Matthew 6:21). If He is our portion, we will echo the psalmist: “Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You” (Psalm 73:25).

Dear sisters, let us ask ourselves honestly: Do we delight in His presence? Not merely visit, not merely request, but genuine delight. May we receive grace to hunger for fellowship with Him daily.

May distractions lose their charm over our lives. May His presence become our joy and our home.
May the grace to love Him not only in word, but in longing, abound in us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Let Us Pray:
Abba Father, we thank You for the privilege of knowing You and drawing near to You. Forgive us for the times we have been content with Your blessings but neglected Your presence. Create in us a heart that delights in You above all else. Restore our first love and make communion with You our greatest joy. Teach us to seek You daily out of deep affection. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
