Echoes of Truth

Theme:Only One Thing Matters
I have one passion – it is He, only He — Count Nikolaus von Zinzendorf

We live in times where the world encourages us to pursue so many things at once, like chasing degrees, the latest material possessions, contemporary achievements, sometimes even in the name of ‘subduing the earth’ and fulfilling purpose.
To be honest, none of this in any way can be tagged as outright sin or rebellion against God. Instead, in many ways, they can even ‘exalt’ God in our lives. However, where we miss it is not establishing from the very onset why we want them in the first place. If we will be very honest, we are in many ways trying to prove something to ourselves, to others, and perhaps the world at large.
The truth is vanity has subtly set into our heart, we are unconsciously or consciously lusting after the cares of this world. We subtly seek validations and affirmations from the attention the pursuit of these ephemeral things can afford. We become so self-conscious from chasing after these things and in the long run, we have divided affection.
Slowly, gradually, Christ becomes one of our many pursuits, rather than the centre of it all. Yet, Scripture tells us that “no one can serve two masters”; it must be either one or the other (Matthew 6:24). The truth is all of our worldly pursuits can be traced to the master of this world, mammon, or say money. Money answers for the prince of this world.
But sis, you don’t get to this point by chance. We must seek to stay reminded that Christ’s call to us was first and as a matter of priority, to belong wholly to Him and Him alone. Jesus Himself declared that “one thing is needed” and Mary chose that one thing, choosing Christ and showing it (Luke 10:42).
Sis, if there’s anything God is pointing to us in this season, it’s that intimacy with Him supersedes every other calling. To have one passion does not mean we ignore important responsibilities. Not at all. Rather, that every other pursuit finds its meaning and direction in Christ.
When Jesus becomes the central affection of our heart, He begins to reorder our desires. Like the psalmist, we begin to declare: “Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You” (Psalm 73:25). We would also say, ‘One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life…’ (Psalm 27:4).
When Christ becomes our one passion, we come less encumbered with life’s too many pursuits. Obedience becomes an effortless habit. We can behold Him without any distractions whatsoever. His light shines at the corners of our heart and exposes every subtle idolatry. And at this point, transformation is inevitable.
You only can when you intentionally seek Christ daily and give Him first place in your life. Already, we have His assurance, “you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).

Let Us Pray:
Father, we declare that You are worthy of our whole hearts, and not divided affection. For the many times we have loved other pursuits rather than above You, please forgive us. Draw our hearts back to You and teach us to desire You supremely. Strip away every rival affection and make Yourself our one true passion. Help us to live with undivided devotion, that our lives may reflect Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen
