Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell. — John Wesley
The Lord does not need gifted speakers, polished theologians, strategic planners, or even professors to challenge and prevail over the gates of hell.
It is about men whose fears and desires had been transformed such that their hearts can be described with this Scripture: Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity ( Hebrews 1:9).
They are men who hate sin alone and want God alone.
This exposes that true spiritual impact is rooted in an undivided desire to pursue God’s course.
Aligning with the Scripture’s declaration: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).
When desire for God replaces desire for the approval of men, it becomes easier to please God, love righteousnessand stay away from sin. These are the men who become terrors to the kingdom of darkness.
True hunger for God’s righteousness makes men fearless.
Throughout biblical history, God has worked through those whose appetites were based on the simple desire to uphold the righteousnessof God.
Remember Elijah, who stood alone before the prophets of Baal? Or Daniel, who refused to be shaped by Babylon’s table.
Their righteous desire to exalt God made them detest anything that will separate them from Him: idolatry, gluttony, coveteousness, man-praisers…
The Apostles also, in Acts 4, who stood before authorities that could imprison or kill them. They were not looking for the most cunning strategy to respond with.
Rather, their prayer was: “Grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word” (Acts 4:29).
And Scripture records the result: “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit” (v.31)!
Their hunger produced boldness, and it was not difficult for power to follow.
Their power flowed because their desire was rightly ordered.
Systems are not what will produce that revival that churches need today.
Where are the souls set ablaze? Hearts that are cleansed from fear, desires that are purified are such hearts that heaven is seeking to respond to. And the force responsible for shaking hell is HUNGER!
Understand that God entrusts authority to those who are no longer governable by fear. When God becomes the only desire, intimidation will lose its voice.
This is why Elijah could stand alone against prophets of Baal, and Daniel could sleep peacefully among lions. Hunger disarms fear!
Today, the fear of being misunderstood, cancelled, isolated, or labelled extreme is what confronts Christians the most. This is what causes our desires to become diluted. We become passive towards sin and act/live with indifference.
The devil can never take such Christians seriously.
In a bid to be accepted by the multitude, we find ourselves unconsciously softening truths, becoming quiet on our convictions, delaying obedience, dividing our loyalty to accommodate comfort and acceptance.
The truth we must always remember is that God does not need a multitude.
He simply needs those few whose hearts have chosen to hate sin and to love righteousness.
Let Us Pray: Father, deliver me from fearing what people think more than what You desire. Make me fearless, not because I am strong, but because You are enough. Cleanse my fears and purify my desires. Teach me to fear sin alone and to desire You above all else. And, make me a vessel through whom Your power can flow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
