The Tragedy of an Unacceptable Fast

ECHOES OF TRUTH

In Isaiah 58, the Lord rebuked the manner of fast by those who were calling on His name.

Those to whom the Lord sent the rebuke were truly hungry and thirsty for God, they want to know God’s ways and wanted to be near God. God recognised that they were seekers of Him (Isaiah 58:1-2).

However, something was wrong. They were not seeing God. They were not hearing God. No matter how much they tried to draw near, God seemed to be moving farther. No matter what they did, it simply did not move God.

They told God to see the measure of their fast and the quantity of their self-denial.

They told God to take note of the days they had spent on the mountain without food.

They wanted Him to take note of them; to see their dry lips and their efforts; and they wondered why God was not impressed.

In His mercy, God highlighted the problem. To maintain the integrity of His Word; where He promised that He can be found when we call upon Him; He responded in verse 3b- Isaiah 58:3: “‘I will tell you why!’ I respond. ‘It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves.’”

God had to have mercy on them to highlight what the problem was. God needed to prove the integrity of His name and His Word when He said just a few chapters before that He should be sought and called to when He is near and can be found (Isaiah 55:6).

Then God said in verse 3b, ‘“I will tell you why!” I respond. “It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves.’

Sisters, do we see that? Did it make any sense to you?

Sisters, do we see that?

Imagine fasting for thirty-one days, waiting until 6:00 PM to break your fast, or going twenty-four hours straight on weekends, only for God to look at you and say, “She did not do any of that for Me!”

What???

God says, “There is no reward for that. You cannot see My face, nor can you see My hand. I cannot change your situation based on this fast because it was not for Me in the first place; it was for you, to please yourselves.”

Ha!!!

Hmmm!!!

God is not primarily impressed by how many days a person goes without food, how strict their fast is, or how much physical discomfort they endure. What matters to Him is the condition of the heart behind the fast.

A person may fast for many days and yet remain proud, unforgiving, self-centered, stubborn, or unwilling to obey God. Such a fast may be long, but it lacks the brokenness that God desires.

Another person may fast for a much shorter period, yet approach God with genuine repentance, humility, surrender, and a deep awareness of their need for Him. That person’s fast is precious in God’s sight.

The Bible says, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” (Psalm 51:17).

The heart of the matter is that God will not accept a fast, regardless of its length, if it is merely an outward display that fails to impact the inner man.

When a person fasts, God expects to see a humble heart, not one filled with the oppression of others, contention, or strife. He looks for a heart that recognizes its own shortcomings and its desperate need for penance.

God expects a heart that is repentant, mourning, and in need of His strength; a heart that approaches Him to trade its physical weakness for His Divine power.

God did not see any of these in them. Instead, He saw a person who simply was following religious expectations and putting on the expected costume that is appropriate for fasting.

We see the frowning face, the cracked lips, the feigned humility when someone asks why we are not eating only to say: ‘Oh, I am on the mountain’ with some subtle laughters and gentle smiles.

On our statuses or social media pages, we drop daily fasting quotes and other things that show from the first glance that our heads are bowed, we are dressed in burlap, and covered in ashes (Isaiah 58:5).

God says that is not fasting. He says such an approach to the spiritual sacredness of fasting could never move Him or please Him! In other words, we will never touch God nor encounter Him that way.

God is saying that the only kind of fasting that can touch Him and move Him is one that is done from a place of brokenness. Isaiah 58:6-12 highlights what brokenness means to God and where it starts from.

  • Loose the bonds of wickedness: Abandon secret sins and unrighteous habits.

  • Undo heavy burdens: Stop exploiting others or placing unnecessary pressure on them.

  • Let the oppressed go free: End all forms of mistreatment and cruelty.

  • Break every yoke: Sever ties with anything that leads you away from righteousness.

  • Share your bread with the hungry: Actively provide for those who lack food.

  • Bring the homeless poor into your house: Show hospitality and provide shelter for those in need.

  • Clothe the naked: Care for those who lack the basic necessities of life.

  • Do not hide from your own flesh: Be present, loving, and responsible toward your family and community. Do not be untouchable because you are fasting.

  • Stop the pointing of the finger: Cease from blaming, judging, and criticizing others. Don’t point fingers at your motherin-law, at a suspicious aunty or uncle, at the government etc.

  • Stop speaking wickedness: Eliminate malicious talk and vanity from your conversation.

  • Focus on God’s honor rather than your own pleasure: Prioritize His will over your own desires during your time of fasting.

  • Practice genuine humility: Abandon the “show” of religious ritual, such as bowing your head or feigning sadness for the sake of public approval.

  • Acknowledge your need for Him: Approach the fast with a truly broken and repentant heart, relying entirely on His strength rather than your own.

Take time to read the passageand see for yourself, sis.

A truly broken heart is one that receives grace because it has been rid of self-dependency, self-worth, self-care, self-pity, and self-satisfaction. It has become desperate. It has relinquished control and has no desire to be seen or accorded the honour of men.

All she wants is the Lord’s touch, the Lord’s gaze, the Lord’s grace.

She is like the woman with the twelve-year issue of blood. She is not necessarily craving the mighty hand of God. She is so broken that she would be satisfied with merely touching the hem of His garment.

He does not even need to touch her. She simply wants enough room to touch Him. So, in that brokenness, with sufficient faith, she presses through the crowd, through the multitude trying to catch His attention.

But such a heart cannot go unnoticed by the Master. It is a heart that recognises its unworthiness. It mourns in dependency because it sees only one Source of hope and presses in to touch Him, believing that even such desperation means something.

In the end, she receives more than she ever imagined: complete healing, restoration, and far more than anyone else could have given her. She did not return empty-handed.

God says that those who fast in an acceptable way before Him will experience this:

“Salvation will come like the dawn, and your wounds will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind. Then when you call, the Lord will answer. ‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes.'” (Isaiah 58:8-12, NLT)

Did you read that well sisters?

According to Isaiah 58:8–12, when you engage in this type of true, God-centered fasting, you move into a position where you experience the active presence and favor of God in specific, powerful ways:

What a True Fast Does to You

  • Your light will break forth like the morning: You will experience clarity, spiritual illumination, and a sense of direction that dispels the darkness in your life.

  • Your healing will spring forth speedily: You will see a quickening of restoration in areas where you have been wounded, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

  • Your righteousness will go before you: You will walk in a level of integrity and favor that paves the way for your future actions and decisions.

  • The glory of the Lord will be your rear guard: You will have divine protection and backing, ensuring that the presence of God covers your past and supports you from behind.

  • The Lord will answer when you call: You will experience an immediate responsiveness from God; when you cry out, He will say, “Here I am,” ending the feeling of distance or silence.

  • Your light will rise in obscurity: Even in the midst of dark, confusing, or hidden circumstances, your life and purpose will shine brightly and become visible to others.

  • The Lord will guide you continually: You will move away from confusion and self-reliance because God Himself will provide ongoing, consistent direction for your life.

  • He will satisfy your soul in drought: Even when your circumstances feel dry, empty, or barren, He will provide internal fulfillment and peace.

  • He will strengthen your bones: You will be invigorated with supernatural energy and physical resilience.

  • You will be like a watered garden: Your life will be vibrant, fruitful, and sustained by His life-giving presence, even in harsh environments.

  • You will be like a spring of water whose waters do not fail: You will become a source of life and blessing that does not run dry, even when the world around you is struggling.

  • You will rebuild and restore: You will be empowered to repair the “ruins” in your own life and become a person who helps restore the lives and foundations of others.

How amazing!!

In short, the result of a true fast is a total transformation from a state of struggle and “religious effort” into a life of divine connection, constant guidance, and sustainable fruitfulness.

Is this not why we choose to participate in Juicy July? Is this not what we are hoping to achieve when we fast for 31 days? What better ending could there be? What greater reward for our fasting than to have the Lord Himself quickly respond to our every call and personally guide us?

If we are going to fast at all, we must do it right. Otherwise, it will all end in vain.

We must begin to plead with the Holy Spirit to expose every pride in our hearts that has kept us from being wholly yoked to Christ in righteousness.

We must ask Him to break us until we are truly and completely broken before Him.

We must be broken for Juicy July to make any sense in our lives. Then the rewards of fasting will be ours.

Let Us Pray

Dear Father, thank You because You want us to get it right in July, that is why You have begun to recalibrate our hearts and mind with Your Words of Truth and life. Please bring us into permanent alignment that we may do Your will. We desire to do fasting the right way that You may be glorified even in our abstinence from food. Please break every part of us that is hardened to this truth,  bring us to absolute submission that we may do Your will even while fasting.  We know we must be broken to bring us to absolute dependency on You. Dear Lord, please bring us to the right disciplines that will break us the way we should be broken. Give us wisdom as needed to make all necessary adjustments that will bring us to deeper experiences in our walk with You. Thank You Lord. In Jesus name, Amen!
