THE EAST AND THE RIVER

My sisters, there is a beautiful detail in Ezekiel’s vision that is very easy to overlook. The Bible tells us that the River flowed eastward (Ezekiel 47:1-8). At first glance, it may not seem significant. But when we remember the book of Genesis, this single detail becomes one of the most beautiful pictures of God’s heart.

Throughout Genesis, moving east was often associated with man moving farther away from God. After Adam and Eve sinned, they were driven out of the Garden, and cherubim were placed on the east side of Eden to guard the way back to the Tree of Life (Genesis 3:24).

After Cain murdered his brother, he left the presence of the Lord and settled east of Eden (Genesis 4:16).

The builders of Babel journeyed eastward before settling in Shinar, where they sought to make a name for themselves apart from God (Genesis 11:2).

When Abraham and Lot separated, Lot journeyed eastward, choosing what looked attractive to his natural eyes, and before long, he found himself living among the wickedness of Sodom (Genesis 13:11-13).

Do you see the pattern? Again and again, east became the direction of exile. The direction of self-dependence. The direction of compromise. The direction where man wandered farther and farther from the presence of God.

Then Ezekiel gives us a surprise. The River… flows east.

Can you see? God does not send His River only to places that are already beautiful. He sends it toward the places where life has been lost. Toward barrenness. Toward brokenness. Toward the consequences of man’s departure from Him.

What amazing mercy! Instead of abandoning the places marked by sin and death, God sends His River there!

That is exactly what we see in the life of our Lord Jesus. He did not remain where everything was comfortable and respectable. He deliberately went to the places others avoided. He touched lepers when everyone else kept their distance. He sat with tax collectors and sinners. He walked through Samaria, though many would have gone around it. He entered homes filled with grief. He stood beside tombs. He crossed the Sea of Galilee for one demon-oppressed man in the country of the Gadarenes because one life mattered to the Father.

Every step Jesus took revealed the heart of the River. The River always flows toward the place that needs life the most.

Now, my sisters, listen again to the words of Jesus: “Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

The River that once flowed from the Temple now flows through every believer who has received the Holy Spirit. This means that every one of us has an “east.”

Your east may be your home. It may be your office. It may be your classroom. It may be your hospital ward. It may be your neighbourhood. It may be your church. It may even be someone sitting quietly beside you today, carrying a burden that no one else can see.

The Lord has not placed you there by accident. He has sent His River there!

Sis, don’t expect the thirsty places to come looking for the River. The River always goes to them.

THE RIVER MUST KEEP RISING

My sisters, by now you may be asking, “If the River is to flow out of me continually, how do I keep it from running dry?” The answer is simple.

The River flowing out of us depends on the River continually flowing into us. You cannot keep giving what you are no longer receiving. You cannot keep pouring if you have stopped drinking.

This is why our fellowship with the Lord is so precious. We never outgrow our need to sit at His feet. We never become so mature that we no longer need His presence. In fact, the more the Lord uses us, the more we discover our absolute dependence upon Him.

There is a statement I want you to remember, dear sis: The measure of the River flowing out of you will never exceed the measure of the River flowing through you.

That is why the Apostle Paul exhorts us to be continually filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). It is why Jude encourages us to build ourselves up on our most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit (Jude 20). It is why Paul told Timothy to stir up the gift of God that had been entrusted to him (2 Timothy 1:6).

Do you see the pattern? The Lord has done His part by giving us His Spirit, but He also calls us to cultivate our fellowship with Him.

Every time you open your Bible with a hungry heart, the River rises. Every time you spend unhurried moments in prayer, the River rises. Every time you pray in the Holy Spirit, the River rises. Every act of obedience, even when it is costly, the River rises. Every time you choose worship instead of complaining, the River rises. Every time you quietly wait before the Lord, listening for His voice, the River rises. Little by little, day after day, the current becomes stronger.

My sisters, rivers do not become mighty overnight. They are strengthened by a continual supply.

In the same way, a strong spiritual life is not built by occasional moments of enthusiasm but by a daily, faithful walk with the Lord. Those hidden moments that no one else sees are the very moments in which God deepens the River within us.

So never neglect your secret place. Never become too busy to pray. Never lose your appetite for the Scriptures. Never stop drinking from Christ. For as long as you remain connected to the Source, the River within you will never cease to rise, and it will always have fresh Life to pour into others.

THE RIVER FLOWS UNDER AUTHORITY

Now, there is one lesson we must never forget as we begin to speak about the River flowing through us. The River is powerful, but it is never independent. Yesterday, we stood on the banks of Ezekiel’s River until the waters became too deep to walk through. At that point, the man was no longer directing the River. The River carried him.

That picture must never leave our hearts.

Today, the River flows out of us, but it still carries us. We are never the ones in charge. We do not decide where to go, what to do, or when to act. The Holy Spirit does. The River belongs to Him.

One of the easiest mistakes a believer can make is to confuse power with permission. Just because God has given us power does not mean He has given us permission to act whenever we choose.

The servant of God must always remain under the government of God.

Look at our Lord Jesus. No one has ever carried the fullness of the Holy Spirit as He did. Yet He never acted independently of His Father. He said, “The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do” (John 5:19). Again, He declared, “I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me” (John 5:30).

If Jesus, the perfect Son of God, refused to minister outside the Father’s leading, how much more should we?

Fpr instance, the lame man at the Beautiful Gate. For thirty-eight years he sat there, begging. Jesus regularly went to the Temple. He would have walked past that gate many times. He knew the man was there. Yet He never healed him. Why?

Was it because He did not care? Of course not.

Was it because He lacked power? Certainly not.

Jesus only did what the Father was doing. He never allowed compassion to replace obedience, and He never allowed opportunities to dictate His ministry. He was led by the Spirit in everything.

A few weeks later, after Jesus had ascended, Peter and John came to that same gate. This time, the Holy Spirit moved. Peter took the man by the hand, and immediately strength entered his feet. He stood, walked, leaped, and praised God. That miracle became the doorway through which thousands heard the gospel and believed in Christ.

Do you see the wisdom of God? Had Jesus healed that man years earlier, it would have been another glorious miracle among the many He performed. Instead, God reserved that miracle for another season, using it to establish the ministry of the apostles and to draw multitudes into His Kingdom.

Sis, there will be moments when you wonder why the Lord has not prompted you to speak, pray, intervene, or act in a particular situation. Do not become discouraged. Do not force what God has not yet initiated. Sometimes obedience means stepping forward in faith. At other times, obedience means quietly waiting until the Holy Spirit says, “Now.”

Never allow zeal to run ahead of the Spirit. The River never does.

The greatest miracle is not doing many things for God. It is moving with God.

May we become women who are so yielded to the Holy Spirit that we neither lag behind Him nor run ahead of Him, but flow exactly where He leads, exactly when He leads, and exactly as He leads.

For the River is most powerful when it remains under the government of the One from whom it flows.

THE RIVER EQUIPS US WITH GIFTS

My sisters, when the River begins to flow out of us, it does not flow without purpose. The Holy Spirit knows the exact need before us, and He knows the particular expression of Christ that will meet that need.

A distressed woman may need wisdom. A sick child may need healing. A confused husband may need counsel. A hidden matter may need to be revealed. A family under spiritual oppression may need discernment and authority. A discouraged church may need prophecy. A situation that has reached the end of all human possibility may require a miracle.

The Holy Spirit does not send us into these situations helpless. He gives gifts.

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)

Notice that Paul calls them manifestations of the Spirit. Through these gifts, the invisible Holy Spirit makes His wisdom, knowledge, power, and heart visible in a particular situation.

The gifts are not trophies that announce how spiritual we are; they are expressions of the River for the benefit of another person.

God gives them because someone needs to be helped, strengthened, delivered, healed, warned, comforted, or directed.

Let us look at what this may actually mean in our everyday lives.

The Word of Wisdom

The word of wisdom is a Spirit-given answer for a particular situation. It is not the same as being naturally intelligent or experienced.

It is when the Holy Spirit supplies the wisdom needed for a matter that human reasoning cannot adequately resolve.

When two women came before Solomon, each claiming that the living child belonged to her, Solomon could not call witnesses or examine medical records. Yet God gave him wisdom that uncovered the true mother without harming the child (1 Kings 3:16–28). The answer did not come from the obvious facts; it came from God.

Now bring that into your home.

Perhaps your husband returns from work withdrawn and irritable. You ask what is wrong, but he says, “Nothing.” Your natural reaction may be to feel rejected and confront him sharply: “Why are you always shutting me out?” But while you are about to speak, the Holy Spirit checks you. He gives you wisdom to remain quiet, prepare his meal, let him rest, and approach him gently later. When he finally speaks, you discover that something serious happened at work and he has been struggling with shame and fear. The wisdom of the Spirit prevented a difficult evening from becoming a marital battle.

At another time, wisdom may tell you not to remain silent. It may give you the right words, the right moment, and the right spirit in which to address something that has been damaging your marriage.

The word of wisdom may come when two children are accusing each other and you do not know who is telling the truth. Instead of beating both children out of frustration, the Lord may show you the question to ask or the way to handle the matter so that the truth comes out and both children are taught.

It may come when a sister tells you she wants to leave her marriage immediately because of something that happened. You feel the seriousness of her pain, but you also know that one careless sentence from you could influence the direction of an entire family. As you listen, the Holy Spirit gives you words that neither excuse sin nor push her into a reckless decision. You speak with truth, compassion, and divine perspective.

My sisters, imagine what our homes would become if we continually welcomed the wisdom of the Holy Spirit before reacting. Sometimes one Spirit-given sentence can prevent ten years of damage. Sometimes one Spirit-given instruction can preserve a child. Sometimes one Spirit-given decision can save a marriage from a crisis that human emotion would have worsened. This is the River flowing as wisdom.

The Word of Knowledge

A word of knowledge is when the Holy Spirit reveals a fact or matter that we could not have known naturally.

Elisha knew what Gehazi had done secretly after receiving gifts from Naaman (2 Kings 5:20-27). He also knew the private military plans of the king of Syria, so much so that the king thought someone within his own household was betraying him (2 Kings 6:8-12). The knowledge did not come through investigation; God revealed it.

This gift does not always arrive dramatically. Sometimes it comes as a quiet but persistent awareness in your spirit.

You may be washing plates when one of your children comes strongly to your mind. Nothing appears wrong, but you feel an unusual burden to pray. You begin to intercede, only to discover later that the child was in danger at that very moment.

You may be speaking with your husband, and while everything he says sounds normal, the Holy Spirit makes you aware that beneath his words he is deeply discouraged. Instead of responding only to the surface conversation, you ask gently, “Are you feeling as though you have failed in something?” He looks at you in surprise because that is exactly what has been troubling him.

You may be praying with a sister, and a particular issue repeatedly comes into your heart. Perhaps you sense that her deepest struggle is not the financial difficulty she mentioned but a private wound from rejection. You do not expose her before others or speak carelessly. You ask tenderly, and the tears begin to fall. The Lord has brought the hidden wound into the light so that healing can begin.

A word of knowledge may reveal that a child who appears rebellious is actually being bullied at school. It may expose the true source of repeated conflict in a home. It may reveal a hidden danger, a secret burden, or an area requiring prayer.

But we must remain humble. Every thought that enters our minds is not a word from God. We should not frighten people by constantly announcing, “God told me.” What the Holy Spirit reveals must be handled with love, wisdom, purity, and submission. The purpose is not to prove that we know something; the purpose is to help someone. This is the River flowing as knowledge.

The Gift of Faith

Every believer is meant to live by faith, but the gift of faith is a special impartation of supernatural confidence for a particular situation.

It is a sudden certainty produced by the Holy Spirit that God is about to act or that a seemingly impossible matter can be entrusted completely into His hands.

When David stood before Goliath, everyone else saw an experienced warrior. David saw an uncircumcised Philistine defying the armies of the living God. A confidence rose in him that could not be explained by his age, size, weapons, or military experience (1 Samuel 17).

The gift of faith can arise in an ordinary home.

Perhaps your child becomes seriously ill, and every report around you is creating fear. You are not denying the medical facts. You are not pretending that the situation is small. Yet while praying, an unshakable assurance rises within you that the Lord will preserve that child. You suddenly find yourself praying with authority instead of panic.

Perhaps your husband loses his job, and there is no obvious source of income. At first you are shaken, but as you seek the Lord, supernatural faith enters your heart. You begin to thank God, encourage your husband, manage the home wisely, and refuse to let fear govern the atmosphere. You know that your Source has not lost His position.

Or the Lord places an assignment before your family that appears far beyond your resources. Every calculation says it cannot be done. Yet the Holy Spirit gives you both unusual certainty and courage to obey.

This gift does not make us irresponsible. It does not cause us to reject sound counsel, medical care, or careful planning. It gives us divine confidence where fear would otherwise paralyse us. Sometimes the entire household will borrow courage from the faith God has placed in one person. This is the River flowing as faith.

Gifts of Healings

Jesus went about doing good and healing those oppressed by the devil (Acts 10:38). He touched lepers, opened blind eyes, restored withered limbs, healed fevers, and made the lame walk. The gifts of healings show that the River carries the Life of God into afflicted bodies.

My sisters, this must become practical to us as well, not just leaders of the church. 

Your little child wakes in the night burning with fever. Attend to the child responsibly, but do not behave as though the only power available in that room is medicine. Lay your hand upon the child. Call the child’s name. Speak the promises of God. Ask the Life of Christ to flow from your belly into that little body.

Your husband complains repeatedly about pain. You can massage the area and also place your hands upon the place in faith. You are his wife. Do not underestimate the spiritual privilege of blessing the man with whom God has made you one flesh.

You visit a sister after surgery. Do not offer only sympathetic words. Sit beside her. Hold her hand. Pray with faith that strength, restoration, and healing will flow from you through her body.

Someone may tell you, “I have had this condition for years.” Do not let the length of the illness become greater in your mind than the Life of God. The woman with the issue of blood had suffered for twelve years. The bent woman had been afflicted for eighteen years. Time did not weaken the power of Christ.

Healing may be immediate. It may unfold progressively. We do not manufacture results or condemn the sick when healing does not appear at once. We remain compassionate, obedient, and dependent upon the Lord.

But we must stop excluding ourselves from the words of Jesus: “They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” (Mark 16:18). He said believers. That includes the mother praying beside a sickbed. It includes the wife praying for her husband. It includes the sister visiting another sister. It includes you. This is the River flowing in healing.

The Working of Miracles

Discerning of Spirits

My sisters, this gift is extremely important.

Discerning of spirits is the supernatural ability to recognise the spiritual influence operating behind a person, expression, atmosphere, or manifestation. It helps us distinguish what proceeds from the Holy Spirit, what proceeds from the human spirit or flesh, and what may be influenced by an evil spirit.

Paul encountered a young woman in Philippi who kept declaring that he and Silas were servants of the Most High God. Her words were technically true. Yet Paul discerned that the spirit speaking through her was not the Holy Spirit. He commanded the evil spirit to leave, and the girl was delivered (Acts 16:16-18).

Without discernment, we may accept something because its words sound correct.

Now consider how this may operate in a marriage.

Your husband comes home and responds harshly to a simple question. Immediately, you feel anger rising. Your mind begins to say, “He does not respect me. I will show him that I cannot be treated this way.” Within minutes, the atmosphere changes, voices rise, and a small incident becomes a serious quarrel.

But through discernment, the Holy Spirit may help you recognise that a spiritual attack has been pressing against his mind all day. This does not make wrong behaviour right, but it changes how you respond.

Instead of fighting your husband as though he is the enemy, you recognise the enemy trying to gain entrance through the moment. You lower your voice. You refuse to release destructive words. You pray inwardly. You wait for the right time to address the behaviour.

Later, while he sleeps, you hold his hand and pray against every weight attacking his mind. The quarrel Satan hoped to use to create distance becomes an opportunity for intercession and deeper unity. That discernment may have saved your evening. Repeated over time, it may save your marriage.

In church, someone may appear highly spiritual, speak loudly, and use impressive words, yet something within you remains unsettled. Discerning of spirits helps you avoid being carried away by charisma, manifestations, dreams, or claims that have not proceeded from God.

But this gift must never become suspicion. A suspicious woman sees evil everywhere and accuses without evidence. A discerning woman remains peaceful, prayerful, loving, and watchful. She does not announce everything she senses. She carries it before the Lord and waits for His wisdom concerning what to do.

Sometimes discernment will lead you to pray. Sometimes it will lead you to speak. Sometimes it will lead you to set a boundary. Sometimes it will lead you to seek help. Sometimes it will lead you to remain silent.

My sisters, a home guarded by a discerning woman is not easily invaded. She notices when the atmosphere changes. She recognises when ordinary disagreement is being inflamed into division. She knows when fear is trying to settle over her children. She knows when a seemingly attractive relationship is carrying the wrong influence. She does not panic, but she stands in prayer and acts under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. This is the River flowing as discernment.

Different Kinds of Tongues

My sisters, when Paul speaks about different kinds of tongues (1 Corinthians 12:10), he is referring to one of the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit. This is more than our daily prayer language: it is the Holy Spirit giving utterance in ways that go beyond our natural ability.

He may enable a believer to speak in a language they have never learned, or to utter a supernatural tongue for a particular purpose, as the Spirit wills.

The Day of Pentecost gives us a beautiful picture of this. The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak as the Spirit gave them utterance. Jews from many nations had gathered in Jerusalem, and each one heard the wonderful works of God declared in his own language (Acts 2:1-11). The disciples had never attended language school for those nations; the Holy Spirit Himself supplied the utterance.

Imagine the River flowing through you.

The Holy Spirit sends you on a mission trip to a remote village where you cannot speak the local language. As you begin to pray for a woman, words begin to flow from your mouth that you have never learned. You do not understand what you are saying, but the woman suddenly begins to weep. Later, an interpreter tells you, “You were speaking my language perfectly. You told her that Jesus had seen her tears and had come to set her free.” That is the gift of different kinds of tongues.

Or imagine that you are gathered with believers in prayer. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit gives you an unusual tongue unlike your normal prayer language. There is a weight and authority upon it. When the interpretation is given, the church receives a clear message from the Lord that brings direction, warning, or encouragement to the entire congregation. That is the gift of different kinds of tongues operating together with interpretation.

Perhaps you are ministering deliverance to someone under severe spiritual oppression. As you pray, the Holy Spirit gives utterance that you have never spoken before. The atmosphere changes. The person is set free. You may not understand the tongue yourself, but Heaven knows exactly what is being uttered as the Holy Spirit ministers according to the Father’s will.

The River has found another way to express the mind and power of God.

My sisters, we should never despise this gift because we do not fully understand it. Neither should we manufacture it or imitate it. The gifts of the Spirit are never produced by emotion or human effort; they are manifestations of the Holy Spirit, given as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11).

So remain yielded to Him. If He chooses to speak through you in a tongue you have never learned, do not fear. If He gives a tongue for the edification of the Church, obey Him with humility and order. If He gives you utterance for a specific assignment, trust the River.

The Holy Spirit knows every language on earth, and He knows every language in Heaven. When He chooses to speak through a yielded vessel, He is never limited by the languages that person has learned.

Interpretation of Tongues

When a tongue is given publicly in the gathering of believers, the Holy Spirit may also provide its interpretation so that the church can understand and be strengthened (1 Corinthians 14:5, 13, 27). Interpretation is not necessarily a word-for-word translation; it is the Spirit-given meaning of the utterance.

Take for instance a small prayer meeting where a sister speaks in tongues under the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Another sister receives the interpretation: a message calling the women to return to their secret place because the Lord desires to restore weary hearts. As the interpretation is shared, several women begin to weep because the message speaks directly to what God has been dealing with in them.

That is not confusion. That is the River bringing a clear message to the Body.

But everything must be done decently and in order. We do not interrupt meetings to draw attention to ourselves. We remain submitted to spiritual leadership and to the instructions given in Scripture. The Holy Spirit is powerful, but He is never disorderly. This is the River flowing through tongues and interpretation.

Desire to Be Useful

Do you see it now, my sisters? This is how the River serves. This is how Jesus continues to touch people through His Body. The gifts of the Spirit are not distant theological terms. They belong in the realities of life. 

So do not despise the gifts. Do not assume they are reserved for pastors, prophets, or people standing on large platforms. Paul wrote to the whole Church: “But covet earnestly the best gifts…” (1 Corinthians 12:31).

Ask the Lord to make you useful. Ask Him for the gift needed in the place where He has planted you. The best gift in a particular moment is the one that meets the need before you. When your child needs healing, healing is the best gift. When your marriage requires divine wisdom, wisdom is the best gift. When deception is attempting to enter your home, discernment is the best gift. When a sister is collapsing under discouragement, prophecy may be the best gift.

Earnestly desire the gifts, but never pursue them apart from the Giver.

A gift without intimacy eventually becomes performance. Power without love can injure the very people it was meant to help. Revelation without humility produces pride. Spiritual experiences without the government of the Holy Spirit produce confusion.

Remain close to Jesus. Let love govern every manifestation. Let Scripture judge every experience. Let the Holy Spirit determine when, where, and how the River flows.

The gifts are His. The power is His. The glory is His. We are simply yielded vessels through whom He chooses to reveal His love.

LET THE RIVER FLOW

My Father’s daughters, the world is not waiting for another opinion; it is waiting for Life!

Do not ask whether the world is dry enough to need the River, it is. Do not ask whether homes are broken enough, they are. Do not ask whether marriages need healing, children need hope, the sick need life, the lost need Christ, or the Church needs revival, they do.

Ask only one question: Has the River found enough room to flow through me?

You carry Zoe within you. The very Life of God dwells in your spirit. You carry His light, His peace, His wisdom, His love, His power, His presence, you carry Heaven’s River.

But a river hidden accomplishes nothing. A spring that never flows cannot refresh the thirsty, and a lamp hidden under a basket cannot light a room.

Jesus did not place His Life within us so that we might admire it; He placed His Life within us so that the world might encounter Him through us.

Remember the parable of the talents. The servant who received five talents traded with them and gained five more. The one who received two gained two more. Neither buried what had been entrusted to them. They did business with their master until what they had received multiplied.

My sisters, God has entrusted something infinitely greater than talents to us: He has entrusted us with His own Life. Do not bury it beneath fear. Do not hide it beneath comfort. Do not silence it through unbelief, nor quench it through compromise. Let it multiply.

Let the Life of Christ overflow into your husband, into your children, into your neighbours, into your workplace, into your church, into the lonely, the forgotten, the broken, and into the nations, if the Lord should send you there.

Every day, ask yourself, “Did Life flow out of me today?”

When I spoke, did Life flow from my tongue, or did I release criticism, bitterness, fear, and death? When I looked at people, did my eyes communicate the compassion of Christ, or did they communicate contempt and impatience? When I stretched out my hands, did they bless, serve, heal, and lift someone who had fallen? When people left my presence, did they leave carrying more of Christ, or more of my flesh?

The Scripture tells us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” (Proverbs 18:21). Every day we are releasing something. Every conversation carries something. Every decision carries something. Every atmosphere we enter is affected by what flows from within us.

Let it be Life.

When your children hear your voice, let Life flow. When your husband walks through the door, let Life flow. When you pray over the sick, let Life flow. When you encourage a weary sister, let Life flow. When you forgive someone who wounded you, let Life flow.

When you worship, when you work, when you cook, when you serve, when you correct, when you lead, and when you love, let Life flow.

One day, we shall stand before our Lord. May we not simply say, “Lord, thank You for giving me Zoe.” May we also be able to say, “Father, by Your grace, I did business with the Life You placed within me. I did not bury it. I let it flow. I watched it multiply, bear fruit, and bring life wherever You sent me.”

For this is the Father’s desire: that the River would not stop with us, but that it would flow through us until the whole earth is filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

So, my sisters… open every gate. Yield every part of your life. Give the River room. And wherever you go, let the River flow.
