THE QUESTION WE NEVER ASK …

THE QUESTION WE NEVER ASK …

Shade recently noticed a trend.

Almost as soon as she arrived at work, there was always a man at the door opening it for her. It happened the first day, and she thought it was a coincidence. It happened again the next day. Then again.

Morning after morning, the timing was always exact. By the time she stepped close enough, the door was already being opened.

One day, she decided to test it. She stayed back in her car longer than usual. She waited deliberately, telling herself that this time, the pattern would break. But when she finally stepped out and walked toward the door, he was there again, opening it as he always did.

ECHOES OF TRUTH

She laughed out loud, shook his hand and looked into his face. ‘Thank you so much for every time. What’s your name?’

‘You’re welcome, Shade. My name is Emma. Emmanuel’. He said warmly.

‘Oh, thank you, Emma’  Shade gave a big smile. ‘Do have a great day at work’ She rounded off and started to walk down the corridor to her office.

THE QUESTION WE NEVER ASK …

And this continued for many months….

And erm…. years!

Each time, Shade would smile brightly, say thank you, and walk away.

One day, she mentioned it casually to Sandra, her friend.

‘Do you know the Emma guy?’  She laughed as she spoke. “When I arrive every morning, he would always open the door for me.”

Her friend looked at her and paused.

‘For how long, now?’

‘Four to five years maybe’ She said casually, blowing the gum in her mouth.

“What??? He has never missed?”

‘Never! The exact time I reach the door, he’s there to just open up’

‘Wow! Have you ever asked him why?”

Shade shrugged. “Why would I? He’s just being nice.”

Her friend leaned in. “Shade? Just being nice? For four to five years?”

Shade’s brows furrowed.

‘Erm….am I doing something wrong’

‘I think you aren’t being rational or reasonable, my friend. How does Emma always know when you arrive? There’s nothing for him to see you coming through. Yet he never misses you. Does he have something that monitors you?…’

‘Oh, do you know I haven’t really thought of that? I just…’ She was saying but Sandra cut in.

‘Have you ever sat down with him to ask what he wants? What he’s looking for? You keep receiving what he gives and walking away.’

‘Ah, he could want something?’

‘Well, I don’t think he’s doing all these for nothing. Like consistently like this? Wow! So surprising you never reasoned this through’

‘Wow…But a few times though, I gave him some gifts just because I feel a little guilty…’

‘Erm, well, please find out what he wants. It is very important’

THE QUESTION WE NEVER ASK …

.

.

That is how many of us walk with God.

He blesses us with a new car. He opens doors for us. He answers needs we did not even pray about.

Then, we smile and say ‘Thank You, Lord’ and move on.

When the thing gets too overwhelming, we testify at church.

“Even when I don’t pray, He blesses me. Even when I don’t read my Bible, He shows up for me. This God is too good o”

Oh, really?

That’s it?

You aren’t going to go beyond this?

You won’t ask God ‘Why?’

Why, Lord? Why do You keep blessing me when I have not sought You?

Why do You keep opening doors when I have not been faithful?

Why do You pursue me when I have not built a relationship with You?

God keeps showing up. He keeps intervening. He keeps covering us. He keeps preserving us from things we did not even see coming. And we just carry on with life as if nothing special is happening.

Really?

Dear sister, God is not just opening doors for politeness!

He is not doing it to be admired from a distance.

He is not interested in polite thank yous shouted over the shoulder as we hurry into our own plans.

No!

Your Father wants conversation.

He wants encounter.

He wants relationship.

He wants commitment.

He wants fellowship.

He wants intimacy

There comes a time when saying thank You is no longer enough.

There comes a time when testimony must turn into intimacy, sisters.

There comes a time when blessings must push us toward obedience.

And let it be today!

Let today be the day you actually sit with your Father and look Him in the face with tears and a bow.

Let today be the day you actually ask Him ‘What do You want from me?’

And then stay long enough to hear His answer. And keep doing this every now and then till the relationship actually comes alive and burning.

Every door God opens is carrying a question with it.

Every blessing He gives you is asking for a response.

Every provision is an invitation to pause and ask, Lord, what are You really after? What do You want from me? Why do You keep doing this?

God’s blessings are like burning bushes that should call us to stop rushing past the door, to turn back to the One who keeps opening it, and to ask to know His heart.

The most dangerous place to be is not in lack but in abundance without understanding!

Oh, may God give us understanding in Jesus Name. Amen.
