Infinite Hunger

Infinite Hunger

Echoes of Truth

January 23rd

Theme: Passionate Hunger

This emptiness he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself- Blaise Pascal

Until we stop deceiving ourselves, we cannot find true rest. Have you wondered why you desperately want a new phone and when you finally get it, within two weeks, you are no longer freaked out by it? Or you saved so desperately to pay for a certification, you get it and then you are bothered about what next to do with your time.

How about looking forward to hanging out with a friend, getting married, or something practically exciting? However, you have barely started with that company and the thrill depreciates so quickly.

It has nothing to do with the other party. Your disappointment, loss of interest and excitement, certainly was not their fault. It all begins with you and ends with the object of your affection.

ECHOES OF TRUTH

When God made man in His own image and likeness, He made man to be on par with Him. Meaning, man was made to feel and think like God. His identity started in God and ended in God. Man was made to patake in the realities of his Maker.

Therefore, man’s existence was fashioned out in a way that made Him capable walk with God and relate with HIm in ways other creations would never dare to.

Man’s likeness to God is embodied in the breath of God that man carried and so Man had the capacity to experience God (Psalm 8:4-8).

However, the fall of man into sin and death took away man’s capacity to fully partake and experience the realities of God-Man relationship. There was a huge vacuum, a void that was created because that part of Man where God filled in His Mightiness is now vacant.

Man thus has been hungry for restoration of God within him. However, the prince of this world has continued to deceive man that the glories of this world could do a better job in satisfying man than the Holy Spirit, God inside man. Remember Jesus’ temptations in Matthew 4.

So ask yourself, are you daily pressing into God to have Him fill that void in  you? Are you desperately seeking Him to fill that insatiable hunger in you? With what have we stayed satisfied? God or money? Food or the Word of God? Fashion or a gentle and quiet spirit? People or the Trinity? Job or service to God? Spouse or being Jesus’ bride?

Who holds your affection? Who does your heart ache for? What consumes your sleep? What consumes your day?

Until we make up our minds and determine in our hearts that we will only find fulfilment in God and doing His will, we will always be hungry yet never satisfied.

Our affections will be spent on things that will always consume us and we will never truly live.

The key is to be wary of the love of the world and its affections (1 John 2:15-17) otherwise we will always be tempted to use it to fill the infinite longing for God ever present within us.

Let Us Pray:

Father, we repent of misplaced affections and the subtle love of the world that has dulled our hunger for You. Holy Spirit, expose every substitute we have leaned on in place of God. Restore in us a true appetite for what is eternal. Reorder our desires. Gather our scattered hearts. Fill every emptiness with Yourself. Plant within us a holy dissatisfaction with anything that is not You. Let our deepest longing be for Your presence, and may we find our full satisfaction in You alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
