HEADACHE

A painful sensation in any part of the head, ranging from sharp to dull. It is the most common pain in the world.
Many people have experienced Headache one time or the other.
The main symptom of a headache is a pain in the head or face.

Types of Headache.

1.Primary

2. Secondary
Primary Headache is not a symptom of an underlying illness.
Primary Headaches can be Cluster headache, Migraine, New daily persistent headaches (NDPH), Tension headache.

Secondary Headache is a symptom of underlying medical conditions.
Secondary Headache can be due to Disease of blood vessels in the brain, Head injury, High blood pressure (hypertension), Infection, Medication overuse, Sinus congestion, Trauma, Tumor.

Causes of Headache

Headaches can have causes that aren’t due to underlying disease.

E.g lack of sleep, an incorrect eyeglass prescription, stress, hunger, loud noise exposure or tight head wear.

So it’s not every time one have a Headache that Paracetamol is the solution.

First, try and understand the cause, then treat or allay the cause.

So if you’re Hungry, and your stomach isn’t even hurting, but you’re feeling pain in your Head, eat first and the headache is gone.

If it’s lack of sleep, try your best in sleeping adequately and you’re free from headache.

Relief your stress too, do away with stressors.

Don’t use too tight head wears, do away with prolong usage of rubber bands.
The use of medication should be the last option, if Headache persist
Headaches can also be triggered by environmental factors, such as:

1. Eating certain foods or ingredients, like caffeine, alcohol, fermented foods, chocolate and cheese.

2. Exposure to allergens.

3. Strong odors from household chemicals or perfumes.

Treatment of Headache

1. Drink enough water

2. Try to rest in a dark room (exposure to light makes headaches worse)

3. Apply ice pack to the foreahead, do not apply directly on the skin.

4. Sleep for at least 6- 8 hours daily. Avoid frequent interruption of your circadian rhythm(sleep cycle)

5. Eat adequately and don’t skip meals.

6. Relax

7. Use medications e.g Paracetamol

8. After all this, and headaches continue, see a physician in an approved and accredited hospital.
